I was in China a couple of months back. We landed in Beijing, spent a few days and needed to get to Shanghai. We had 2 choices, get a domestic flight or get the train. Considering that the plane was more expensive, took the same time to travel and the fact that it needed more effort to travel (i.e security checks, luggage checking and what not) we decided to take the train.
Needless to say I was very impressed with the entire railroad system. For me it was almost like the ideal Airport experience. Convenient, Clean, On time with half the hassle. The only downside was that it is not yet easy to use for non Chinese speaking people like us. However the staff and people were very friendly and were always eager to help.

I recently took the fast train from Chengdu to Guilin. It takes about 6 1/2 hours, for 1200 km, so about 200 km/hour on average (there are many stations along the way). It’s not the fastest of the fast trains. But very comfortable, and most of all, much more convenient than the plane. The train left at about 6:40am, and we were there by 1:00pm. But: you can arrive at the station 15 minutes early and it’s OK, as opposed to the plane where you should be there at least one hour in advance. The train station is more central and easy to get to. You don’t have to: wait to check in, wait for security, wait for boarding, wait on the tarmac… There is security when entering the station, but there’s hardly any lineup. In the train: comfortable seats, plenty of leg room, large windows so you can admire the view. Very smooth ride. Overall, it was just a pleasant, relaxing morning. About 40% cheaper than the plane. There’s just no contest.

We recently took the high speed maglev from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Longyang Road Station in Shanghai where we hailed a cab for the remainder of our trip to our hotel.
The ride took about 7 minutes, and the train reached about about 270 MPH (about 430 KMPH) the ride is very smooth almost like sitting at a desk except for a mild bump when the compression wave from the train and the compression wave from the train going in the other direction pass. The trains pass so quickly that it’s very difficult to see the oncoming train on the other track.

I tried one time from Chengdu to Chongqing. (My hometown), less than 2 hours journey. I tried 1st clas seat, very quiet and steady. If you try Business class (more expensive than 1st class, only available in longer journey trains) You would not want to use airplanes any more. Quiet, peaceful, super steady, just like Roll Royce in cars. Similar feeling. Lol

Wonderful, I always go business class - you get a nice big seat, dinner from a friendly steward and it isn’t all that expensive either - what you would pay for a economy class domestic flight.
The last time I took it was two weeks ago to Beijing Airport - it was me and the cop guarding the train in the first class carriage - he was a friendly fellow who said I had big, muscly arms haha! I would take it again for sure.

These four words are exactly the feeling of travelling on China’s high speed railway.
Even travelling on the speed of more than 350 km/h, you will hardly feel any uncomfortable along all the way.
The best thing is, China’s high speed train never delays (except in extreme whether), which is much better than flights.
Moreover, the train ticket price on China Train Booking App is not as expensive as a flight ticket. For example, a 2nd class seat on the train from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Hangzhou East Railway Station (distance: 167 km) costs only 73 RMB (=11 USD).

When you buy the ticket, you feel that price-wise maybe you should have flown domestic instead.
When you arrive at the station 10 minutes before the train leaves instead of an hour before, you feel like okay you’ve saved some time. At the very least you’ve saved yourself hanging around an airport for a while.
When you sit down in your seat and realize that you can actually move your legs, or get past your neighbor without disturbing said neighbor, you feel skinnier.
When you look out your window and see rural China flying by, you feel caught in a time-warp.
When you walk up and down the aisles at your pleasure and convenience, you feel the blood circulating.

When you realize that your North American infrastructure is light years behind China’s, you feel ashamed.
EDIT: Thanks for all the upvotes. And thank you as well to the Quorans who have suggested that “light years behind” might not be an appropriate phrase to use here. I’m aware that a light year is a unit of distance, not time (This is not the Millennium Falcon making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs!). Please understand I’m using this phrase idiomatically.

The seats are very comfortable. A first class ticket costs similar to an economy air ticket for the same journey. I know which I would rather sit in. Even the second class chairs provided plenty of space. There is enough space that I can sit cross-legged if I want to.
Freedom to move about is great too. The aisles are wide enough that you can get up and stretch without disturbing anyone. You can use your mobile phone, use the internet, or work on your laptop. There is also a restaurant car where you can buy some food - though limited to microwaved rice meals or instant noodles. The toilets are large, clean and comfortable to use too.
There is very little feeling of motion. The train doesn’t rattle, rock or sway. Even when braking into a station platform, you can barely feel it.

There are not many things that I could improve upon, but I’ll give a few. I would like a power outlet at each row or seats to charge my phone or laptop. Some extra English language signs would be handy, especially when in smaller cities. Finally, I would like for people who don’t have Chinese ID cards to be able to buy electronic tickets more easily. Currently, you have to go and claim your ticket from the counter staff before entering the departure hall, whereas, Chinese people just beep through with their ID cards. (Though I did once board just by waving my phone with the booking confirmation number on the screen.)
If you are travelling around China, take the train wherever possible. It is so much more convenient than flying.

They are very comfortable; MUCH better than flying.
In Chinese airports, you feel like a cow which is being sent to slaughter, except that the departure gates are always changing about 30 minutes before departure, and when they change, airport management makes sure that the newly assigned departure gate is at another terminal which is at the other end of the airport. Then, when you get there, you find out that your flight is delayed, but no one says how long it is delayed.
In contrast, Chinese train stations for high-speed trains are very modern, and they always depart on time. Depending on the class of ticket you purchased, you can stretch out on the train and spend all your time setting up your appointments on WeChat before you arrive at your destination, so this makes things much more efficient.
This is why I travel by train in China, and never fly if I can help it.

Quite a few people have answered this question and I think you can safely say China is leading the world in rail technology and after a serious accident a few years back, caused by corrupt officials cutting corners, the government is keen to prevent this kind of thing happening again, so I think you can now travel with peace of mind.
While all the positive side of Chinese rail travel has been covered, and rightly so; it really is a wonderful system which is the envy of many supposedly more developed countries, only a couple of people have commented on the negative aspects.

For me personally as a foreigner in China the most frustrating thing is having to queue for up to an hour to get your ticket - even if you already booked online. Locals can use the self-service machines with their Chinese ID card but I’ve only found one station so far which has machines that can accept a foreign passport. It seems almost every person in the queue only starts to decide when and where they wish to go when the reach the ticket window and long conversations can ensue before they eventually decide on their preferred time and destination. I’ve missed trains because of this before and on other occasions I’ve queued for over 30 minutes for a 15 minute journey, not including the extra time needed to check through the tight security (not complaining - security and personal safety are a good thing).

4.Ticket machines at Lowu Station in Shenzhen accept foreign passports but not sure at time of typing this whether they only allow for ticket collection for journeys from Lowu or whether you can book and collect tickets for any station.
5.If you can book your return ticket, also try to collect it at the same time you collect your outward journey ticket so you only have to queue once

I once took the train from Tianjin to Beijing - over 150km, there in just over 30 minutes. Clean, very fast, a fantastic service.
Got out at Beijing central station, hopped in a taxi…and sat in Beijing traffic for an hour and a half traveling the last 10km to the office… :-(
