I’’ve always been fascinated by Tulou - also known as ‘’earth buildings’’. So I decided to take a trip to rural Fujian province to check them out for myself! What is it? What’’s inside? You’’ll have to watch and see…….

Kelvin Kueh the producer of Milan movie hired a historical consultant designer from Fujian and made some mistake on real Mulan community. The Fujian designer knew his kind of house but not the northern houses.

@tsukasa1608 well, Xianbei migrated to centra China after they established the centra government. Hakka are proud of their authentic centra Chinese, just lost centra plain later due to all invasion from the north. So, Hakka may have more genetic DNA of Xianbei than the current northern Chinese, you never know ….

@harry h Hakka are authentic centra Chinese? Are your kidding me? Hakka face are typically southeast asian face. Your south dialects share lots of words with the 

Austronesian languages(southeast asian ), so does your custom. The authentic centra Chinese are all about bullshit. You don’’t even look like a Chinese. Your face are much more similar to Thai or Vietnamese.

Fun fact: decades ago, when US saw these buildings from their satellites, and thought they were Nuclear Launchers. After investigating, Americans were relieved!!!

So sad to see the older and uninhabitated TuLous in a state of disrepair. Maybe those could be fixed up and rented into some kind of AirBNB model by their owners for the duration they’’re unoccupied. Would be such a huge boon to the local rural economy :)

You know what, during the cold war period, America used to think that the tulou were some nuclear missile launching pads in China as seen from the satelite images. Later they found out that was a misunderstanding, hahaha.

Ancient Roma had multi-storied building where multiple families lived.

which is 2000 years ago. where as Tulou can’’t be more than 1000 years old at most.

@David Jacobs well in ancient China there are also tons of wealthy people that own multistorey apartments in many ancient chinese cities as well. To have a fair comparison you should show prove of ancient roman farmers or peasant that built such similar apartments as the tulou.

And not surprisingly, Disney got it wrong. Mulan was from northern part of China while Tulou were only built in southern part of China. Just because Tulou looks unique and cool, Disney “made” Mulan live there.

Oh my goodness, this is fascinating and creative historic architecture! I have not had the chance to see the live action film of Mulan, so I hadn’t seen any toulo shown anywhere ever!

Could this be a predecessor of the apartment house with a large courtyard? Certainly the idea of living this way as an entire village is a good way to survive together in tougher times. 

I would guess that the community as a village would pull together during times of adversity such as repairing building damage from storms, helping to look after each other’s young children while parents are busy, and helping each other when illness strikes.

天啊，這太迷人了，非常有創意的歷史建築！我還沒看過花木蘭這部真人電影，所以我從沒見過土樓長什麼樣！

這有沒有可能是大庭院公寓的前身？所有村民都生活在這樣的建築裏，更容易一起度過困難時期。

比如遇到暴風雨後需要維修時，可以大家一起動手互相幫助，還可以互相幫忙照看小孩，以及生病的時候互相幫助。
