Quite simple really, you do what most Religious Authorities did to convince their initial pool of potential ‘believers’ to convert:You walk into their village with a large group of aggressive young men, put a sword to their throat and have them swear to convert/believe/adopt/affirm the reality, truth, greatness and glory of your chosen Deity or you will murder them, their wife and their children in front of the rest of the village until whoever is left believes as strongly as as is required. You may want to rape and pillage a bit anyway to drive home the point of your God’s authority before leaving them with a few Holy Men and armed ‘Warriors of God’ to ensure their continued devotion and commitment to the One True Faith.Rinse repeat from village to village and return every so often to collect tithe, draft some aggressive young men and boys to ‘The Cause’ and marry off a few of their underage girls to ensure future generations of religious fodder.After a few centuries of this your chosen God will be firmly entrenched in the psychological, emotional, cultural, familial landscape of those villages and they’ll self-sustain the belief system through parent-child indoctrination and the tendency of humans to prefer social conformity. Can last centuries or millennia in the right conditions….or until the next religious warlord comes storming through with his own band of Holy Warriors to install their One True Faith….give or take a few more underage girls to seal the deal.That is the most successful formula for propagating religion in human history as I see it. Why not go with what works?Surely you didn’t think reason, logic and the actual existence of any god or gods were the driving force behind faith did you?

Here are the simple steps you need to follow in order to convince an atheist that there is a God.

Come up with a clear definition of what, exactly, you mean by “God.” For example:

Are you talking specifically about the Christian God of the Bible? Allah? Jehovah? One or more Hindu gods? Any of the gods worshiped by past cultures (Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Sumerian, Celtic, Mayan, etc.)?

What are the specific characteristics of the particular God you are talking about? Is this God omnipotent, omniscient and all-loving, for example?What are some specific things that this God has supposedly done, said and/or promised? The more specific you can be, the easier it will be to convince an atheist that God exists, believe me. Did this God, for example, create the universe in 6 days, destroy most of life on earth with a massive flood, etc.? Did this God promise to grant “whatsoever is asked for in faith” or that his followers would be able to handle venomous snakes and drink poison without being harmed?Once you have a clear definition of exactly what sort of God you are talking about, provide some evidence of something this God has actually done for which the only possible explanation is your God. Note that it’s not enough to simply say that “science” can’t explain something or that something is “too improbable to have occurred naturally.” All that proves is that we currently don’t have a good explanation, not that your God did it. And no fair arguing that the only explanation is some sort of nebulous “something” that exists “somewhere” that you are just now going retroactively define as “God,” either. No, it has to be something for which the particular God that you personally worship is the only possible explanation.So that’s basically it. Carefully define your God and then provide evidence of something for which your God is the only possible explanation. No moving the goalposts, no claiming that you have to first have faith in order to see or understand the evidence.

In all seriousness, I would kneel down and pray if the God of my childhood, a heavenly, loving father, did any (and preferably all) of the following:Scooped out all the plastic out of the ocean, saying “you’ve made a bit of a mess of this, haven’t you? I’ll clean up this time, but next time you’ll have to do it.” Likewise global warming, extinction of species, destruction of rain forests.

Stopped all weapons working, world-wide. Just froze them, with a warning “if you can’t be responsible with your toys, I’ll have to confiscate them”.

Reversed global warming, with a little slap on the wrists to big industry, saying “now, now, that was naughty. You really mustn’’t spoil this Earth. Now start tidying it up or you’’ll go to bed without any supper”.Sowed luscious nutritious crops alongside running streams alongside all desperate hungry people everywhere. Made sure that distribution was open and equitable.

Made all torturers, rapists, users and abusers stand in the naughty corner, meditating in silence, before giving them effective therapy to develop empathy, understanding, insight, self-control, self-confidence etc. (whatever was needed to get the job done).

Made sure that each creation was in perfect working order before delivery.Made the holy book open, transparent, congruent, rational and non-violent, embracing the principles of loving-kindness for all.

Made sure that those in charge adhered to these same principles (or back to the naughty corner they go).

Healed the sick, the injured, those damaged by other human beings.

Gave everyone a real, equal chance to survive and grow.

Let my exhausted husband retire before his job kills him, ditto exhausted people everywhere.

I’m sure there’s more.

EDIT:

People are praying for an end to the coronavirus. I might as well add that to my list too. My mother said, “God expects us to help ourselves”. So, as helpless as we are in a calamity, not even the religious expect god-given help. God or no god, I agree. Stay at home. We don’t need god for that. But it would take a miracle for all those who don’t take the virus seriously to do the same (or the army, whichever comes first…)

How do I convince an atheist that there is a God?Oh, that’s terribly easy! You just provide some unequivocal independently-verifiable physical proof that your god exists. I’d change my mind instantly if you could do that.Just because you, yourself are convinced of the existence of your god is not a good enough reason for any other person to believe you. People are convinced of all kinds of things that aren’t true that they’d like me to believe, but their conviction about those things is no basis for reasonable persuasion. Some people think that aliens are visiting us on earth, for example, and others think they can talk to the spirits of the deceased. Still others are of the belief that Scientology makes sense, or that NASA faked the moon landings. I’m not inclined to assign legitimacy to any of those things just on someone else’s conviction, no matter how strong it is.You yourself would not believe me if I told you, for example, that there was a big dragon sitting on your front lawn right now. You’d want to see it. And probably smell, it touch it and hear it too. Above all, you’d probably want some other people to see it as well, just to make sure you weren’t hallucinating.Unless you can provide some actual substantiation that your god exists, you have no advantage over any other person trying to persuade someone of an irrational belief.
