We hate Vietnam and Vietnamese Why do we hate Vietnamese?The Vietnamese have absolutely no respect towards us. They make fun of our language and culture. Khmer Krom, the indigenous people, rightful owner of South Vietnam live in constant discrimination by the Vietnamese. They are second class citizens in their own ancestral land.

How is it possible for us to like Vietnamese?

Regarding the Khmer Rouge period, keep in mind that the Ho Chi Minh trail ended in Cambodia’s sovereign territory. As the war escalated, these foreign Vietnamese troops further pushed into the Cambodian countryside away from the Cambodian-Viet border. With them came more bombings, more fighting, and a foreign authority. Though they toppled the Khmer Rouge, the subsequent occupation was another period of Vietnamese occupation from their perspective. Hanoi did not plan it as an humanitarian mission. The aim was removing a defiant Pol Pot who had invaded Vietnamese territory and refused to work with the Vietnamese SRV government. The Vietnamese would occupy Cambodia for the next decade.

Beyond that Vietnamese can often have a patronizing view of the Khmer and Lao . It’s not uncommon to hear some Vietnamese talk idyllically about a new Indochina federation. For them the idea sounds wise and natural. Their vision is of a bigger political space, once again guided by Vietnam. For Khmer, this sounds like the return to yet another era of Vietnamese political domination.

In my opinion, Cambodians view Vietnamese varies depend on who you ask the question and whether he/she is open-mind or not. For most of cambodians don’’t have any any close relationship with vietnamese, they think vietnamese are wicked and a bit evil, they are afraid vietnamese will do harm to cambodia, like a brain wash story they have been told: the vietnamese’’s ancestors took the land of khmer’’s ancestors. The same thing happen to some cambodians who deal business with vietnamese. They fear vietnamese will steal their jobs, their business model…., and chinese is less harmful.

There is some interesting parallels between Sino-Vietnamese relations and Viet-Cambodian Relations, both have to do with the bigger power forcing their culture on the weaker one and taking land.

Don’t worry however, do French and German people hate each other? Germany again and again plunged France into decades of brutal war over and over again, even decades after WWII they still had ill-feeling towards each other, but as France and Germany modernized, this hatred began to die off.I suspect that will happen in terms of Cambodia-Vietnam and China-Vietnam some time in the future.

While travelling in Cambodia about 10 years ago, I was surprised by how casually many would mention how evil is Vietnam. Usually it goes this way :

- Vietnamese army had invaded us many times in the past

- They stole the Mekong Delta and Saigon from us

- Now they’’re taking our lands and bring criminality

- etc, etc…

Looking at their history, no wonder there’’s some resentment. Part of actual Vietnam used to be Khmer and even most of actual Cambodia has been under vietnamese colonial rule.

And yet a bit of admiration too. “Soon Vietnam will be as develloped as Japan” told me once a very uninformed young man. . So basically Vietnam is as popular in Cambodia than China in Vietnam.

Ok not sure if I am qualified to answer this question but will try my best. From what I know, they do not like Vietnamese and hate Vietnamese just like how some Vietnamese hate Chinese and some Chinese hate Japanese. I once knew this one guy who is nguoi Cham so not sure if he counts as Cambodian but he once said this one phrase to me that still bothers me to this day. He said “ Vietnamese tried to commit genecide towards us!” I was dumbfounded and did not know anything about it. However, what I found funny was that he was dating a Vietnamese girl too but not sure if they ever got married or not. so I guess not all Cambodians hate Vietnamese as some still intermarry. I think everything is in the past now so I hope we can all move forward and stop with all of the hate.

As expected! The memory is to fresh! Not long ago the whole South VN was part of Cambodia. I think it is bigger than the current Cambodia. Well, that is human history and behavior: conquering and conquering when you can. The Cambodians owe a lot to the French. We hate Vietnamese.

Vietnam did nothing but harm to Cambodia, stole and looted and took our land away from us. Hypocrites know nothing else but to cry when they got some small islands taken away from them by China but they don’t have a word in the world about Khmer Krom.

I hope Vietnam gets bombed to dust and we can take back what is ours.
