Puripant Ruchikachorn, lived in Tokyo
I grew up in Bangkok, lived in Tokyo for 3 years, was in Seoul for 6 months (actually Incheon but I went to Seoul on weekly basis), was in Shanghai for 3 months, and have visited all other cities for about a week at least once.
In general, it’s hard to compare cities and people tend to be biased. (I think I am a little biased toward Bangkok; I live in the city now.) It depends a lot on your experience and the purpose of your visit.
· If it’s your first time in Asia, Tokyo will impress anyone. Its sheer size. Most people know Japanese food and are familiar with a form of Japanese culture: food, manga/anime, Jpop, etc.
· If you have visited a city in East Asia, you should go to Bangkok. Unfortunately, many modern Asian cities can feel a bit similar. Because Bangkok is the only city on the list that is not in East Asia, it’s the most different from the others. Its temples are beautiful.
· If you plan to stay for a few months, it’s pretty hard to live in Tokyo, Seoul, and most cities in China without knowing local languages. I think Shanghai is the friendliest for expats, especially westerners. Bangkok and Hong Kong come in a close second.
· If you are into grand/historical tourist attractions, no city on the list can beat Beijing.
· If you are into modern/cool stuff, Seoul and Shanghai are on the cutting edge. This is debatable but I feel like Tokyo has lost its cool edge for a bit and Hong Kong is gaining.
· If you like exploring hidden gems, Taipei and Bangkok have plenty of them. Somehow these two cities don’t get mentioned much in western media, at least in English. They are also cheaper than the rest. You may need to look beyond English guidebooks; Japanese ones are pretty good alternatives (if you can read Japanese, of course.)
· If you like taking photos, the city life in Tokyo and Hong Kong is very photogenic but the old stuff in Beijing or Bangkok is more iconic.
· If you like the hustle and bustle of big cities, Tokyo, Taipei, or Seoul may not really feel like that. It’s hard to explain but these three cities are too neat. They are huge but they don’t feel city-like or, to be more precise, like New York or Chicago. Tokyo is definitely more like a gigantic well-maintained machine but not a spontaneous ad-hoc beautiful mess like New York. The backstreets of Seoul may still give you that impression but people of Hong Kong and Bangkok do breathe like that.
· If you like food, you can go to any cities on the list. They all have great restaurants.
· If you like food and you plan to stay for a long period of time, food in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Bangkok is more diverse. Tokyo can be great for some types of food (burger or steak) but horrible for others (Chinese and Italian food!)
· If you … I can go on forever.
Krystal Xu, lived in Singapore (2004-2015)
I was born in Shanghai, moved to Singapore when I was 8 and lived there for more than a decade. I also traveled to Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei (I’ve been to Bangkok once but I was too young to remember much).
Beijing: more focused on Chinese traditional arts and culture. Great Wall, and palaces are there, together with its iconic hutong. There’s also signature dishes like Peking duck and palace cuisine. There is a bustling startup scene too which is really cool.
Shanghai: arguably more prosperous than Beijing. While Beijing is the political powerhouse, Shanghai is more of the central financial hub where lots of foreign investments flow in. Go to Pudong and you will see many big name banks and other financial institutions setting foot there. You also get to witness colonial legacies in terms of architecture like The Bund (stunning at night!)
Singapore: Singapore is the cleanest, greenest and most organized city out of all these. It’s also called a city-state because it is a city and also a state. It is close to the tropics and hence the trees there resemble the species that can be found in rainforests. Singapore is slightly more expensive than China but the street food is very affordable and unique! Singapore is a multi-racial society (its race issues are a lot less strained than America’s though) and hence you will get to enjoy Chinese (and there’s cantonese, haka, hokkien subgroups), malay and indian food all at once. There’s also indigenous culture called Peranakan which I personally find very intriguing.
Tokyo: I LOVE JAPANESE FOOD SO MUCH. Try its omakase, go to Tsukiji market etc. Tokyo Disney Sea is also amazing. The metro system is very efficient but can get a little too complicated because it’s a vast network. I had difficulty navigating coz the command of English of the Japanese is really not as good as the other cities, but the excellent service and constant courtesy make up for that. There’s also a great deal of funky culture, from anime to maid cafe to Harajuku style. Tokyo is an amazing destination for food, culture and attractions!
Seoul: Korea is really known for its cosmetic brands. You will find affordable and good cosmetic shops everywhere. I also love Korean food, from kbbq to ginseng chicken soup. Myeongdong is an amazing paradise for everything! Also there’s historically significant places to visit such as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the Korean War museums. There are hidden cute cafes. If you are into k-pop and k-drama, you can learn from me and plan a list of cafes opened by k-pop stars or scenes that have appeared in k dramas :)
Taipei: I really love Taipei for its emphasis on books and culture. Out of all these cities, Taipei is the one city that still retains a strong reading culture. It has a famous bookstore chain called ChengPin which is popular amongst people. It also has a strong street food culture and be sure to visit its night market!
HongKong: HK is known for its dimsum and yumcha. The DisneyLand was too small and boring. The people there are not as courteous as those from the other cities and you don’t get treated as well as the natives if you don’t speak Cantonese. The islands around HK such as Llama Island are charming though.
Bangkok: BKK has so much cheap stuff from food to clothes! It has an eclectic mix of high fashion and affordable apparel. It also has great street food but take note of hygiene. Two of my friends came down with stomach flu from it. It has an emerging cafe culture and there are cafes that are really quaint and cute! I haven’t been to BKK for a long time so what I comment is mostly from what I have heard from friends.
