David Jones, meat eater who doesn’t support animal cruelty
In my opinion, I think that it’s ethical to eat meat, but only for bare and minimum consumption for survival and if the meat was raised under humane conditions.
1. Many meat eaters claim that we have climbed to the top of the food chain and were meant to eat meat all along, and that is very true. After all, the two canines we have in our mouth aren’t there for just no reason. Many studies have shown that humans can survive on an all-veggie diet, but that would require a lot of bodily regulation and treatment and definitely isn’t the most natural diet. However, if you’re willing to put up with all the hassle and inconvenience of having to take away all sources of meat, I have nothing against it. In fact, I would respect you for sacrificing yourself for a living being which you barely even know, and that is highly remarkable and comparable to an anonymous organ donor.
2. However, that still doesn’t excuse the animal cruelty faced by animals in the US farming industry. Many fellow meat eaters fail to see this point, but I can’t really blame them because when you grow up in a society which eats meat, you don’t question it and just go with the flow. Most children have this dainty image that animals are raised in green pastures, slaughtered, packaged and sold on supermarket shelves. But have you ever asked yourself, how was the meat raised? How was it slaughtered? After you watch documentaries such as Earthlings and Cowspiracy, you’ll find out the truth and realise that it’s not really pretty after all. It’s highly gruesome and puke-worthy, but I won’t delve into the details of it.
3. Therefore, I believe in the COMPLETE organic raising of farm animals. Not just fancy label you slap onto your product to attract more customers to buy it. I mean real organic farming. Like treat your animals like you would treat your pet. Feed it proper food. Groom it. Allow it to roam about with its offspring. Cure an infection if it has one. And when it comes to the moment, kill it quickly with a gun and never, I mean never, let it bleed to death. Do it away from its children, so the offspring will only be confused to find their mother gone. Then subsequently treat its offspring with even more care. I know it’s a lot of work, but if you wanna eat meat, you gotta do it (mind my literature skills).
4. We need to stop this segregation between livestock and pets. I’m not saying that we should suddenly eat dog meat, I’m just saying that we should treat all animals with the same amount of respect. Maybe like those Jainist people who literally swerve away to prevent themselves from stepping on a bug. If an animal dies, we don’t make an Internet meme out of it (*erhm* Harambe *erhm*) but really express our heartfelt condolences to it just like you would for your pet dog or people who lost their lives in action.
5. And we meat eaters need to stop attacking vegans/vegetarians on such a personal level. Most vegans aren’t like the Internet stereotypes. They don’t introduce themselves as vegans before mentioning their name. But even if they do, don’t take it too seriously. They’re not there to hurt you and shame you. They’re just really compassionate people who care for animals so much to the point that they would preach the subject to you at every single moment. Kinda like how you would mention dogs at any possible moment if you’re a dog lover.
So yeah. Hope that helped you. Peace :)

Let us start with pigs:
Morally, I’ve been conflicted in the past. Ultimately, I concluded that, while highly intelligent, they have no other purpose than to be eaten. I’ve exhaustively considered it and, other than training them to be a dog substitute, I can’t think of a single thing they’d do, other than be served up on a dinner table. Even the role of kitchen garbage disposal is better taken by goats, who have the dual purpose of giving us milk and (thus) cheese.
If we all stopped eating pork, there’d be a massive wave of euthanasia across my rather large country. You think the farmers would altruistically have them spayed and neutered and live out their natural lives? No one could afford it. Pigs are already the traditional low-cost livestock, and last I heard, cattle ranchers aren’t exactly making a mint.
I think, from a moral standpoint, we need to pass laws to ensure the humane treatment of livestock. And keep eating it.
(Subsidizing those ranchers, to make the necessary changes, would also be helpful.)
I’ll not go into the … potential propaganda of the militant vegans on precisely how these animals are dying: mistakes have been made, but ‘putting them to sleep’ could harm human health when we eat them. Them being the animals. The non-human animals.
What I mean is ‘free-range’ chickens and such. ‘Cage-free’ eggs. Cattle used to be ‘driven’ - they hoofed it to their seasonal food source. This was likely better for their brains, and potentially their bodies, than the current practice of, I believe, not doing so. And grass-fed beef is probably much healthier for human consumption, anyway. Grass is what the cows are supposed to be eating. DDT showed us that the food chain affects everyone, all the way up the ladder.
