CAUTION: The answer may contain upsetting information.
What were the most devious design elements of medi castles?
Although Medi castles had a few nasty surprises for invaders, my favorite is Bodiam Castle’s murder holes. They are in the ceiling of the gatehouse.

Defenders stood on the floor above and when some poor invader came charging through the opened gate dropped a variety of nasty things on his head. They might drop rocks, cannonballs, garbage, poop, flammable substances, or anything else which would injure, infect, or preferably murder the poor soldier.

What were the most devious design elements of medi castles?
Susan, I especially like the bent entrance, which, as was stated, exposes an enemy’s right flank (weapons arm), leaving the left shield arm useless in the advance.
Do you think they learned this from the Spartans at Thermopylae? You may know or remember this, but it’s sure to be new to some.
The Greeks had several walls that they could use to defend themselves and slow the advance of the Persians. To the left, impassable scrub and mountainside, to the right, the sea. The left flank was naturally defended, but the right flank not so readily defended, as an opponent would simply walk around the wall at it’s terminus in the water.
So here’s what the Spartan’s did: they added on to the seawall at the seaward edge of the beach, but at a right angle to it. The Persians could have potentially walked out past the seawall, turn right, walked a bit, and out flanked the Spartans. Except, the structure was built in such a way that it exposed the weapons arm to the Spartans, rendering it useless and made the shield arm equally useless. This wall was over a hundred yards long. Quite a task to make it all the way to the end of the wall, turn right, and flank the Spartans. I doubt one in a hundred Persians would survive this trek, and unit cohesion would go to Hell in the process.
