I was a beer can collector at one time in my life. There were 2,200 different cans on shelves in my basement. I think there were 30 Falstaff by themselves. Iron City must have had close to 40 back in the mid-1980’s. I never found a St Pouly Girl or the Playboy Girl cans. Budweiser had many. Their first flat top can, was yellow and black. The worst beer I ever tasted was Eslinger out of New York, City! It had a Knight on a Horse.

It’s safe to say my friends and I tasted many great beers. Peiffer and Old Dutch were two that tasted great. Once Pittsburgh Brewing started making it, wasn’t the same as Old Dutch Brewing. At one time in America, there were 5,000 Breweries. Each city had a brewery. Prohibition killed many great Breweries.

After that period in time many “Mom and Pop Breweries” Never can back. Some did well-making soda pop. So they survived prohibition by making sodas. The King of Beers did well also. They set beer overseas to supply the Army, Marines Navy and the Airforce. Truth is many Brewers sent beer overseas.

Budweiser got greedy in the 80’s. They came to Toledo where I lived and undersold Buckeye. Our Hometown Beer. They closed and other beer makes took over that brand. They came close in flavor but it wasn’t the same. So getting back to your question. “Taste is the number one reason I drank good beer.” There are many Mini Brewers out there today that are making great beers. Shinner Beer out of Shinner Texas makes the best Bock Beer.

I’m going to guess that if you are just beginning you adventures in “adult beverages” your current taste is probably shaped by sweet sodas and fruit juices. Most beginning drinkers don’t like dry wines and “hoppy” beers.

Just remember the rule for alcoholic beverages: “Find what you like to drink, sip it slowly and enjoy every sip.”

What do you consider beer? That watery tasting slightly yellowed alcohol beverage sold in cans and bottles pretty much everywhere produced by conglomerate beverage producers? If that is what you consider beer, then no. If I want a refreshing sweetened beverage, I’ll drink soda or juice. They taste better and I don’t end going to the bathroom as often.

On the other hand, if you’re talking about independent brewer products that follow traditional brewing processes making relatively small batches in a variety of styles, then, yes. And not just yes, I love it yes. The variety of flavors and alcohol content can is a veritable smorgasbord of flavor, which makes it a pleasurable experience without the need to drink a dozen to get a buzz.
