The world’s most consumed raw material after water and an essential ingredient to people’s everyday lives is slipping through our fingers, scientists warn. Sand may become a scarce resource due to high demand, they say.

“Statistics show that it takes ten tons of sand to produce every ton of cement.” Whoa!
I think that’s some kind of logical contradiction. Sand is only one component of cement, the other is gravel and cement and water of course. You couldn’t get one ton of cement by inputting 10 tons of sand! The ingredient known as cement is made from limestone, not from sand. It’s limestone that is heated until the limestone becomes a paste like consistency. The word cement has two connotations.

maybe if you include the roads, etc to transport it, roads, storage areas and so on

Modern Cement industries use low grade Bauxite, Steel mill coke residues and fly ash to produce cement

the report says ten tons of sand to make one ton of cement, not eleven tons.

My thoughts exactly. I did stone masonry for more than 25 years. This does not compute. You cannot put 10 shovel’s full of sand in the mixer and get one shovel full of cement out. This must be an error that the editor missed.

No cement contains ZERO sand. What the ignorant “climate scientist” is probably meaning is concrete, which is about 30%-35% sand. That’s why you should talk to a civil engineer if you want to know about concrete and sand usage, not a climate scientist. Their main function is to scare people by making ridiculous alarmist claims, as we see here.

The only ignorant is the jurnalist that threw this numbers, the scientist never talks about this in the webinar - that it’s lixed in the article.

RT is as emotionally manipulating (and minor quality journalism) as the usual mainstream, just in a different direction.

Article author made this mistake not the author of the study. There is a lix to the original webinar, it would be wise to give it a read and don’t throw blame on the scientist.

Probably downloaded from the internet somewhere. Besides, cement is made from limestone and shale, not sand. Why would you use sand? Sand is used when you’re making concrete. Along with stone, cement and water…

This will somehow translate into a new tax.

I don’t know whether Sahara sand is suitable to make glass. I do know that it is unsuitable to make concrete or mortar and that was what the article was about.

Bamboo is a grass that grows fast, is strong, is renewable and can be formed into laminated beams. It would be a viable alternative some dimensional lumber and microlam beams. But I do not know if would have the compression strength that concreate has.

Sooo, at the climate accords they decided fuel and raw materials must be made more expensive annually to discourage there use.
So now as prices increase they say it indicates shortage.
Are we paying attention yet?

This UNEP expert Pascal Peduzzi should go (back?) to school, or at least read wikipedia. Cement is NOT made with sand. The process of making cement uses limestone and clays.

Things Pascal Peduzzi didn`t say in his webinar that YOU didn`t bother watching.
Maybe if you spent more time watching what actual scientists are saying than wasting your time with Wikipedia..a good 1/3rd of which is utter nonsense you MIGHT learn something.

Ahh a fucktard if you had watched the Webinar instead of just the article you would find that Pascal Peduzzi didn`t say that at all. Try again.

Running out of sand?
Sand and gravel are now the most-extracted materials in the world, exceeding fossil fuels and biomass (measured by weight). Sand is a key ingredient for concrete, roads, glass and electronics.
Massive amounts of sand are mined for land reclamation projects, “shale gas extraction” and beach reclamation programs.

I know this is going to come as a shock to you..but sand has many different types and shapes..not all of it is good for construction. You can try to make a building out of sand from the Sahara..i won`t go anywhere near it and i`ll be impressed if you get more than 2 floors up before the entire thing collapses..but you can try.

Sand is everywhere; in deserts, river beds, estuaries and laying at the bottom of all our oceans! I guess April 1st has come earlier this year? Besides, as others here point out, cement (the ordinary Portland variety) is made from Limestone rock.

Well, you guessed wrong, most of the stuff you mention is completely useless in construction.

I’m guessing the Sahara desert is going to be clear of sand in a few weeks then, replaced by prime fertile land.
Shocking for the environment eh?
