I used to hate reading growing up.
Maybe it was because I was a very slow reader and understanding what I read didn’t come easily to me.
Maybe it was because I was swamped with a 110-page reading assignment no matter what day of the week.
Maybe it was because I hated the idea of group reading as an introvert (have one person read some of the passage aloud, move on to the next person, have them read some of it aloud, and so forth).

Maybe it was because I was reading books, poems, and short stories I couldn’t relate to.
Whatever it was, reading made me cringe.
I despised it.
It wasn’t until after I graduated college, that I really fell in love with reading. On my own.
I’m fortunate to have given it another chance.
也許是因為我讀的書、詩和短篇小説我無法體會。
不管是什麼原因,閲讀讓我感到噁心。

If it wasn’t for reading, I don’t know where I would be today.
Reading transformed my life in countless ways.
Having the freedom to read whatever I wanted is what re-ignited my habit, practice, & enjoyment of reading.
如果不是因為讀書,我不知道自己今天會在哪裏。
閲讀在無數方面改變了我的生活。
有了自由閲讀的權利,想看什麼就看什麼,這才重新點燃了我閲讀的習慣、實踐與享受。
As J.K Rowling once said…
“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.”
Those words couldn’t be truer.

這句話是再真實不過了。
I just wish my love for it would’ve come sooner.
In retrospect, my life would still have played out the same way, even if I had gotten a chance to start over & relive my life hundreds of times.
And the reason for that is — our education system is failing us.
我只希望我對它的喜愛能早點到來。
現在回想起來,我的生活還是會以同樣的方式進行,即使我有機會重新開始&重温我的生活幾百次。
而這樣的原因就是:我們的教育系統讓我們失望了。
Our schools are broken and outdated.
When we feel obligated to do something, we’re naturally going to resent & resist it.
Especially when it’s not interesting to us.
On the other hand, when we do something out of love and pleasure and on our own terms, that’s a completely different ball game.
I always wonder, if only reading was presented to me in that frxwork growing up, where would I be today?
Hmm…
我們的學校已經破舊、過時了。
當我們覺得抱着義務去做某件事時,我們自然會反感&牴觸它。
尤其是當我們對它不感興趣的時候。
另一方面,當我們出於熱愛和快樂,以我們自己的方式做一些事情時,那就完全不同了。

Reading allows us to expand our imagination.

Being close-minded and rigid in our thought processes is not something that will take us far.
Especially if our society wants to continue to innovate and disrupt from the norm.
When we read, specifically fiction based books, we keep our minds open because we can afford ambiguity.
Research
has confirmed this. It has shown that fiction readers arose as more flexible and adaptable than non-fiction readers when assessing cognitive closure.

READING MAY LENGTHEN YOUR LIFESPAN.
A team at Yale followed 3,635 adults over the age of 50 for 12 years.
They noticed that people who read books for 30 minutes a day lived nearly two years longer than those who read magazines or newspapers.
Adults who read more than 3.5 hours per week were 23 percent less likely to die, and adults who read less than 3.5 hours per week were 17 percent less likely to die.
To sustain longevity, you have to evolve and there’s no better way to continually transform than through reading.

Reading requires you to focus on the words, sentence structures, and then draw conclusions that relate to your life.

on IQ tests.
Additionally, stronger early reading skills have shown to positively impact intelligence later in life according to this study done on identical twins.
And not only can books increase your IQ, but they can also improve your EQ (emotional intelligence).
As we engross ourselves in a good book it can enrich our empathy for others as we sense the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of the characters in the book.
Understanding human psychology is a critical skill that allows us to develop strong relationships with others.
Literary fiction has been shown to have a strong impact in helping us increase our emotional intelligence, according to research published in Science.

Not only does regular reading help make you smarter, but it can actually increase your brain power.
Just as physical activity supports the heart, muscles, and bones, intellectual activity supports the brain.
You physically change the structure of your brain while reading.
I like to picture my brain growing, changing and making new neural connections and different patterns as I’m reading.
With age comes a decline in brain function & an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s, but reading on a regular basis may help delay the process — by as much as 32 percent, keeping your brain sharper longer, according to research published here.
As the old adage says — use it or lose it.

It allows us to create our own images and ideas and regain a peace of mind.
One study by Sussex University researchers showed that reading may reduce stress by as much as 68 percent!
Reading transports us to different worlds and allows us to experience life from the eyes of different human beings.
