That’s how the old-fashioned or classical system works. Well, I’m not sure the latest Finnish developments with the curriculum (classes 1-9) will be for the better.. they just pretty much overhauled a lot of things and as a parent of a second grader I’m on ringside seat and pretty sceptical of some of the changes.

“Russians do not have a word for ‘fun’ in their language and the word closest to it (развлечение) is best defined as a distraction or diversion although it is usually translated as entertainment or enjoyment. "
That is absolutely wrong statement and author missed a considerable part of Russian nature. Russians appreciate and like extremes. Including extremes in fun. You can take a look at such words as “гульба”, “застолье”,“кутёж”. And what about famous “Russian roulette”? I recommend to see American movie “Dear hunter” about Russian origin guys living in US and then going to Vietnam war The Deer Hunter - Wikipedia All typical Russian extreme fun shown there.

Yes, but they do not have a word for ‘fun’ - this is my point. Roulette is part of the extreme catharsis I am talking about. I can’t please everyone. Also, the Deer Hunter was a movie, not real life. The main character was suffering from PTSD - something that every Vietnam combat veteran suffered and still suffers.

“Russians are neither Europeans nor Asians but an identity all of their own and this transcendental factor is a key component to the distinction.”
This is a fascinating perspective given that many sources would have you believe that Russian culture is a hybrid of Occidental and Oriental influences.

Interesting observations…I can related to some of them as a Russian expatriate who grew up in the West.

Very insightful. As a Russian, I can ascertain that this is quite an accurate diagnostic. Bravo for your willingness to learn and observe.

Well put and interesting! I found it interesting to compare what you wrote to my 20y experience with Serbia and the southern Slavic mentality. There are many things they have in common, though it is perhaps more interesting to find differences.

The British are MUCH more emotionally repressed than the Russians. I am saying this as a Russian after spending half of my life in Britain. So, does that make it less stereotypical Russian trait? The word for “fun” IS “веселье” (or the slang version “веселуха”), “to have fun” - “веселиться”
Russians do not believe that they are far behind the rest of the world, they often (not always) think they are behind the WESTERN world and, actually tend to look down on the Third World which is probably bigger than the Western World and becoming more and more powerful on the global stage. And even the inferiority complex towards the Western World does not mean “behind in just about everything” Most Russians that I know tend to think that we are behind the West in Political Culture, Economics, possibly fundamental science, ecology, lifestyle etc. But the same people beleive that Russian arts, music, literature, theatre, film, and some sports are at least equal to if not better than the relevant spheres in the West. This attitude is changing now, I know a lot of Russian who value Russian healthcare and education (and a few other things) as better than those in Britain.
Otherwise, these observations are very interesting and perceptive
