I’m Laotian American and I’m very optimistic about the future of Laos after it gets connected to China’s High Speed Rail system.
This will bring a lot of economic activity to a Laos which hardly gets any attention at all since it has a low population and is land-locked.
It’s great that Laos has a bullet train before Vietnam or Malaysia and this will bring a lot of money into the country.

but this train is no bullet train, bullet trains or high speed rails are considered to be above 200km/hr. Moreovers its top speed is 160, so it will run at lower than that on avg. This train’s body and design looks like of a high speed train but its speed is restrained for some reason�

Great infrastructure project. I wish we have the same in the Philippines. They are building a 143 km railway in Manila for $7.3B. Very overpriced. That China- Laos railway project is 3x longer and about $1.4 billion cheaper.

Lol. In Kenya we spent $3b for a railway that goes to nowhere and cannot even repay the loan. It is one of the most corrupt infrastructure projects we have ever done. Our trains are not modern and are diesel powered!!!

I hope it’ll be worthwhile for Laos. It’s a very expensive project for a small, low-income country like Laos. The cost of this project is almost 1/3 of Laos’ entire GDP or 1.8 times the country’s annual total government budget. I don’t think any country has ever spent that much on a single project in world history.

It’s just an investment for exploitation, like many 19th and 20th century many imperialist countries built railroads in their colonies. The whole 1000 km railway fare is about 400 CNY, I.e. $60 US dollars, considering that nyc taxi fares starts at $2.50 plus $1.56 per km, 1000kms can easily costs $1562.5 in total, 25 times more expensive.

So you all know, the so called Sri Lanka Hanbantota Port project, for which Yindians claim as a Debt Trap, was a study made by Canada and seconded by Denmark. China’s only role in this project was lend money to Sri Lanka. But once money was given, IMF + World Bank bullied Sri Lanka to pay them money owed to them. THUS Sri Lank had no money to operate Hanbantota port properly.

Many comments don’t understand what goes inside the country. It’s a debt trap. Laos is defaulting on its 2021 loan of more than half a $billion and so the next yrs to come. Laos credit rating got downgraded by all the world’s credit agencies. Average factory workers make less than $120 monthly but 1kg of tilapia fish cost around $2 and electricity with one wall AC unit, small fridge, e-pot, 2 lights on at night will cost them $30. Just think about it. It’s corrupted to the core.
