I worked for two of his companies….Solar City(now Tesla Solar) and Tesla. My experience wasn’t great….I was working at Solar City when he officially took over(he was already a major shareholder prior to that). At that time sales were in a slight downturn as opposed to the year prior, but shortly after he officially took over those sales went into a death spiral. Elon decided that he didn’t really like the aesthetic nature of a solar ‘panels’ and decided to quickly transition to solar ‘roof’. ‘Roof’ was still in the design phase. He made the decision to start taking deposits for solar roof and stop pushing Solar panels. He also decided to get rid of the sales teams(80%). He wanted to push sales online (much like how Tesla auto does it). That sales model did not work and sales went downhill fast. Solar roof is amazing Aesthetically, and the product is mature, however the means of installing it, and the price point is still cost prohibitive for the masses. He also wanted to push his batteries(Power Wall) for in-home use. That’s great, and it is a fine product, but it is usually an add to a LARGE solar system…so… If you are not selling solar systems, then you are not going to sell very many batteries.
Since he took over, two years ago, solar city(Tesla) has had mass layoffs and firings. Thousands of hard-working people have lost their jobs(50%) because of bad business Decisions. You don’t hear much about this, nor do you hear much about his layoffs at Tesla Auto (They also have had mass layoffs). I don’t know many people that still work there, but the couple of people that I do, say it’s a shadow of what it once was…and… morale is an all time low. You don’t hear much about this either. What you hear about are Musk’s next…latest and greatest ventures. Why is that? It is because of carefully coordinated marketing, and manipulation of his “brand”…
I will say that, when I worked there, the in-house training that was provided/offered to all employees was outstanding. The apps(we used a lot of them) to preform our jobs were well written and allowed employees to work efficiently.

When I started there we had 125+ employees working out of my office. When I got laid off there were 17 employees left. The bulk of those employees comprised of 2 install teams, one person to performs each of a handful of specific office functions, a manager, and a admin assistant, and a couple of people in the warehouse.
It is my opinion, Elon’s supposed innovative business models and ‘Vision’ deserves the cricisism and scrutiny he is now staring to receive.
In my time there ( just under two years) I only knew One employee that had a Tesla. That’s because, quite frankly, no one that works there can afford them. I met a handful of employees (out of hundreds) that have solar on thier roof, and one that I knew had the in-home Tesla battery(power wall)…As an employee ther is really no incentive to buy any of the products…. Particularly the automobiles! If you bought a solar system you got $1000 off but had to wait until there was a gap in schedule to accommodate the installation. The average price of a residential solar system, even after rebates/incentives, generally starts at 25 to 30K. Depending on size it quickly goes up from there. Most employees just couldn’t afford them.
I was paid less than what was promised. I was shown the same type of pay scales that everyone is shown. I NEVER had the opportunity to make that amount of money. You could have spent 70–80 or more hours trying, but pay was directly tied to volume of sales(I was not in sales just to be clear), and that is common sense… when sales went down so did the majority of ALL the employees pay.
I’m not seeing any first-hand accounts from people that worked for a Musk held company. All I’m seeing, as answers, are cut-and-pastes from what I call the ‘Musk propaganda machine’…
He/they talk a good game…but what has he actually accomplished other than to become a billionaire?

Elon never puts up with any technical BS. He focuses extremely highly on the integrity of work and has a very professional but low tolerance for under-performers.
I am told that he doesn’t care much about personality flaws, as long as you take the initiative, get shit done, and fast.
At SpaceX there is an expression: “No matter how hard you work, someone else is working harder”… You can guess who that is.
Quoting my friend: “Elon is a serious powerhouse in the building and sets the culture for everyone, which makes it exciting to work there.”
All in all, it sounds like an incredibly intense, inspiring, and focused operation at SpaceX with some of the world’s most intelligent people, a large % in their mid 20s/ early 30s'.

I didn’t work with elon directly much when I was at Tesla, but my team and I met with him to discuss obstacles on a couple occasions.
The thing that stuck out to me most was how quickly he caught on to what he were trying to accomplish and what challenges we faced. He also was never intimidated by our challenges. He didn’t really seem worried about technical details. He always had a way of taking a complicated problem and making it very simple.
He wasn’t ever rude or unprofessional, but he was never afraid to interrupt or challenge an assertion.
