The rise of ‘bai lan’: why China’s frustrated youth are ready to ‘let it rot’

“擺爛”二字負面消極色彩極重,不同於“順其自然(let nature take its course)”,《衞報》將其譯為“let it rot”,可謂簡潔有力。
The phrase, bai lan, which has its origin in NBA games, means a voluntary retreat from pursuing certain goals because one realises they are simply too difficult to achieve.
To languish; decline:
He was thrown into one of Napoleon’s dungeons and left to rot. (American Heritage Dictionary)
Most governments simply leavethe long-term joblessto rot on the dole. (Collins Dictionary)
曾見一首網絡小眾歌曲,曲名是“Leave Me to Rot With the Roses”,歌詞這樣寫道:
I got a death wish on my mind
And I’m running out of time
Now I’m too tired to try
Yah I’m too tired to
Leave me to rot with the roses
Leave me to rot with the roses
Now I’m too tired to try. Leave me to rot with the roses.
