Japan’s Kawasaki Industries, which is known for its motorcycles, has developed a quadruped robot goat to address the country’s labour shortage caused by an ageing population. The goat named “Bex” is able to carry 100kg (220lbs) of cargo and can move across both flat and rough surfaces.

Looking at how this thing walks, it makes me hesitant for elderly riding on anything but flat roads from it’’s stiff flexibility. Granted still a marvel they got this far, but I think if they teamed up with Boston Dynamics for basically a bigger/sturdy Spot with the friendly goat design it would fare better and also be cheaper for the public market.

In one of my classes we studied how as the Japanese population is ageing they created a lot of services with robots but they realised after, that bc of these and maybe other factors Japan as the highest rate of Suicide amongst elders. I think there is really something to be rethinked in the way elders are treated and the fact that like every one else they need human contact more than anything even though a robot can sure be of amazing help to transport heavy things for example.

I love Japanese design. There is NO POINT in making a goat face, it could just look like a bike with legs like the dogs of Boston dynamics - but no, they wanna make it endearing. I hope the robot dogs also get a proper face, preferably puppy like and cute. Robots should be cute and/or lovely!

Uhhh… what makes this humanoid?? Why would you tell me when Kawasaki started making “humanoid” robots?!??

The funny thing is I could see this robot crossing various terrain easier than I could see elderly people staying on it while doing so.

And ..sigh.. I’m not surprised it’s a goat

It’’s sad that the easiest way to tackle japanese aging problem is by building more robots. Their workforce are working like robots from 8-5 and with unpaid overtime. So why not build actual robots, right?
