戲説英文 | 查爾斯國王首次演講，引《哈姆雷特》名句緬懷女王_風聞

上一篇談到了英美政客用典之“謬”，今天我們再來看兩處用典之“妙”。

中國人最擅長用典。用典之妙，恰如歐陽修所言，“含不盡之意見於言外”。（參見舊文）

9月9日，英國查爾斯國王發表首次演講，悼念母親。結尾處，查爾斯動情地説：

And to my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

最後一句出自莎翁名作《哈姆雷特》，“thee”是古英語“you”，“thy”是古英語“your”。

在悲劇最後一幕，Hamlet 中毒身亡，在好友Horatio 懷中逝去。Horatio悲痛地説：

Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince.And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

一顆高貴的心現在碎裂了！晚安，親愛的王子，願成羣的天使們用歌唱撫慰你安息。（朱生豪/譯)

如今，人們常用“May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”這句名言來表達對逝者的祝福。

今天是中秋佳節，我們既慶賀團圓也緬懷故人。舉杯邀明月，不妨默唸莎翁名句，願滿天繁星化作成羣的天使，撫慰故人安息。

就在前幾日，美國總統拜登發表題為“Soul of the Nation”的演講，也引用莎翁名句。

拜登在演講中把特朗普及其支持者“MAGA Republicans”（即“make America great again” Republicans）稱為極端分子，稱他們對美國立國之基構成“威脅”。拜登上台之前聲稱要當彌合分歧的“unifier”，而如今的煽動性言論進一步加劇了美國兩黨的對立。共和黨羣起攻之，罵他：He stole the soul of the nation. 這一罵有點像美國漢學家孔飛力的名作“Soulstealers（《叫魂》）”。

拜登在演講結尾引莎翁名句，請看：

And if we all do our duty — if we do our duty in 2022 and beyond, then ages still to come will say we — all of us here — we kept the faith. We preserved democracy.

這句古色古香的英文“ages still to come will say ”出自莎翁的十四行詩（第17首）：

The age to come would say ‘This poet lies.’

後人會説“詩人撒謊”。

換成今天的大白話就是：the future generations will say。

英美高層寫作班子不約而同地引用莎翁名句，可見莎士比亞在英文世界的影響力。“May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest”比“Rest in peace.”感情更濃烈，“含不盡之意見於言外”。“ages still to come will say” 自然比“the future generations will say”更富文采。這是用典之妙。
