My Favorite Shanghai EP16|Li Yanqi: Shanghai Dialect #shortvideoshowcase #vlog
Presented by Li Yanqi
The thing I love most about Shanghai is its dialect. Shanghai dialect is inclusive and keeps up with the times.
Being inclusive, Shanghai dialect has made the Chinese language more colorful. It takes in words from other languages, “dia (dear)” and “ka fe (coffee)” are both examples.
Being able to keep up with the times, Shanghai dialect enriches our lives and teaches us to open up and be willing to accept accents and voices different from ours.
I once heard an interesting conversation between a child and her grandmother when I was throwing out the rubbish. The grandmother called rubbish “le se”, while the child called it “la xi”, and they were unable to convince each other. I was happy to see that young children were willing to learn Shanghai dialect. And I was happy to go up to them and say, “there is no absolute in languages.”
Shanghai dialect is vigorous just like Shanghai. It is changing and we should be willing to accept different versions of it. In other words, we are moving towards the future with our dearest Shanghai dialect.
Shanghai is my hometown, and to me it is not a geological concept, it is a familiar feeling, it is an accent or expression that I would call it the Shanghai Style.
