Presented by Qiu Tian
Which city has the most coffee shops in the world?
Shanghai has 7,800+ coffee shops and 3.16 café per 10,000 people.
A cup of coffee has a history behind…
Did it ever strike you that as tiny as a cup of coffee can let you know the history of a metropolis?
‘ONE COFFEE’, located on the opposite side of the site of the First National Congress of the CPC on Xingye road, has interesting coffee names and prices, which also convey historical meanings. The coffee, named as ’the Age of Awakening’, is priced as 19.21 yuan, which represents the year when the CPC was founded. The special naming and pricing method demonstrates the pursuit of truth of ardent youth and every Chinese with lofty ideals. Each single cup of coffee has a story behind.
The Gongfei Café (Massing Coffee) on Duolun Road was a place frequented by Lu Xun (1881-1936, the “father of modern Chinese literature”) in the 1930s, and the Chinese Left-Wing Writers’ Union under his banner was brewed here. Having known the history, in a cup of coffee, you can taste the passion and anxiety of those young people who explored a new pathway for the country a hundred years ago.
In the People’s Café, the heroic years of the ‘August 13th’ Anti-Japanese War were reflected on the high wall of the Sihang Warehouse, and on the cup of latte called ‘Made in China’.
A cup of coffee has a history behind. In Shanghai’s cafés, you can immerse yourselves in the interflow between history and modernity, savouring the warmth of coffee culture.
Love coffee, love Shanghai!
