I live in a rural area, about 30 mins from the nearest big box store, and a dollar general just opened up near me like 5 minutes down the road. The crazy thing is they actually have a small produce section. I’m sure this is pretty rare currently and the stuff on offer is very limited and expensive. We’re talking like a few small bunches of bananas, a few small avocados, little cart of tomatos, and a handful of potatos. There’s also a few premade salads and fruit cups. They’re small and probably cost at least 40%-50% more than what you pay by driving to town to buy groceries. So on one hand it’s nice that the option is there but it also is yet another example of healthy options being way more expensive than the junk food that takes no time to prepare.

As a truck driver, fuck dollar general. I will never shop there again. I arrived to their warehouse 2 hours early, they said I have to park and wait, I can’t check in until my exact appointment time. I had driven hard as fuck for 3 days to get there on time. I fell asleep and missed my appointment time by 15 minutes. So they said I missed my appointment time, and I had to reschedule. They rescheduled me for 2 days later. Ok, I fucked up and fell asleep, whatever. I check in at my exact new appointment time. Noone touched my trailer for 3 hours after appointment time. 6 hours later they unloaded my trailer.

I work in an Amazon yard, and live loads can usually come in a few hours early, get checked in, and just wait for the phone call. If a box truck door is open, we just put those guys on then and there. I mean, don’t show up 6 hours ahead of time (which I’ve had people do) ‘cuase now I’m going to get in trouble, but yeah generally just check in and hang out.

Now mind you…depending on the freight we might not have any room on the floor (literally) to unload you because we have no racking in our building…or the belts break….or night shift left days with a shitty hand off…but as far as checking in our building is pretty cool with it.

I used to drive for them when Schneider was one of their carriers. Several times the stores wouldn’t even let me use their restroom after driving hours to get there. They are supposed to assist with unload at the stores. I’d show up & there would be one employee that had to run cash register so I’d have to unload myself. Which meant making me late to the next and me losing money because I wasn’t rolling. They are truly awful to the drivers.

Dollar General has taken over small town markets where people would have to drive probably 20 minutes more at least to get to a WalMart or other grocery store. DG is cashing in on those markets. AND the stores in smaller towns Jack up their prices, I’ve actually comparison shopped with my sister (small town) and myself in DGs at the same time, my DG is about 5 minutes away from WalMart. Hers is about 30 minutes from any other grocery store. Some of the items we looked at were $3 more expensive at her store. Everything was actually marked higher, $3 was just the most egregious. Lol

Dollar General is slowly but surely being litigated against in WV. It’s literally destroying communities and some of the communities are growing wise to it.

They are and it’s due to the overhead. It costs very little to get a dollar general up and running compared to a Walmart let alone a super Walmart. And they are typically worked by one person at a time. They are a financial black hole for communities that are already not doing great.

I heard the CEO crowing about how they profit most when times are hardest and people are struggling most. In the same story they covered how poorly the staff are treated (being forced to cover entire stores alone, low wages etc) and that most of the ‘low priced’ options there are actually not, they’re just smaller amounts that actually end up more expensive when compared to regular stores. I won’t shop there again.

They are also claiming to be more proactive about adding fresher foods to theirs stores to offer more healthy options in areas where there aren’t a lot. I’m sure that is just them trying to save face. It is a serious problem. When I lived in a poor area of Minneapolis the only places I could walk to were a sketchy bodega, a dollar tree and a cvs. The bodega occasionally had fruit and they all had milk and cheese but aside from that it was super processed (so was the cheese and milk tbh). I was fortunate that I was just young, not poor and had a vehicle to drive to a grocery store.
