Of all the countries I’ve traveled to, China is my favorite. ~ Black man from the US here.

@dcafterdark I started in Shanghai and from there went to Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, Beijing. This was a bit before all of the modernization, but I loved it then. I really want to go back and see some of the old places and some new ones. I do speak the language, which I believe made it extra fun, but I don’t think one has to speak Chinese in order to enjoy it there.

@ayejay8862 This is the most classic Chinese tourist route. Most suitable for foreigners. The cities around Shanghai all like sweets, which are more suitable for the taste of foreigners. The cities here are also the most developed.

@user-dw6dr2on6o I don’t recall eating sweets. I mean, I’m not big on sweets. Maybe particularly because I speak the language, I met Chinese people who took me to places that the locals go to in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing areas. I remember a big hole-in-the-wall restaurant where, other than myself, I didn’t see any foreigners. Their specialty was hot pot 火鍋, and they had live folk music with a performer playing a type of ukulele and singing. Amazing experience. Also recall visiting a small town called Tongli 同裏 with canals running throughout and small arched bridges. Met a couple attending Nanjing University who I hung out with and also a guy in Shanghai who showed me around and introduced me to a stand that sold amazingly deliciously seasoned boiled eggs. This was a while back though. Things apparently have changed quite a bit. I need to go back!

cool I am Chinese born in Brisbane Australia. But I live in China too. Living in China is more exciting and faster pace which I like it.

Avoiding the crowd is the No 1 thing we need to bear in mind. 2nd you need to avoid hot summer and cold winter. Being a big country the size of an entire continent, all the historical dramas were on colossal scales.

It’s been my dream to go to China. I love the lively atmosphere there from ancient to old to modern to sophisticated technological vibe. Also the nature: lime stones, mountains, lake, waterfall, dessert, etc. I wouldn’t be able to travel all of China I believe because of its vast continent

Weather wise, kunming sounds like my kind of city. So Beijing snows in winter and reaches 40 in summer? Eeeeeks!

Nice to see you bring your parents along for the trip! It’s uncommon in the Western culture, isn’t it?
@dcafterdark
Very uncommon, but they absolutely loved it here! Can’t wait to see them back again one day

Greetings! You’re very helpful. I consider a trip to China and I have some questions for you:
1) Is it convenient for a foreigner to travel? Keep in mind that I don’t know the language.
2) Should I travel to Hong Kong or Guilin?
3) What souvenirs did you get? At what cost?
Thank you very much.
@dcafterdark
1. Yes, but stick to big cities if you can’t speak Chinese
2. Absolutely! In HK, most people can speak english. It’s also a nice introduction to China
3. Mostly beads and jade things. It varies in cost depending on where you are and what season you travel :)
